Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from Sokoto zonal office recovered N65, 548, 000 cash on Wednesday from the offices of some INEC officers in Zamfara state.
The money was recovered from two fire proof safe during a search in the offices of the Head of Accounts and Cashier of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Zamfara state.
The money is suspected to be deducted illegally from funds meant to cater for the rent of tables, chairs and canopies, as well as funds for movement of personnel and materials to Polling units, by the concerned INEC officers.
The raid was executed following a petition by an INEC Adhoc staff during the 2019 general election in Zamfara state. The staff alleged that officials of the commission illegally deducted part of the allowance due to be paid him and other Adhoc INEC officials for the elections.
Before the raid, the EFCC had arrested four officials of INEC in Zamfara state for alleged criminal diversion of Adhoc staff allowance summing up to N84, 696, 000.
Investigation is still ongoing by the Commission to recover all the illegal deductions.
